[ARCHIVED]The Dogs of War

Deep among the stars drifted the quiet beast: the Allegiance-Class Star Destroyer "Orion." It hung like a crucible among the fire, overlooking the vast nebula of complimentary shades of royal blue and a rich violet. The vessel was not flanked by a fleet of support craft, nor was it attached to a battle group. It was Executor Straum's escapes from uptight land of Bastion, now far away and out of mind. He had much on his mind, to the point where the Hangman of Kessel could no longer be berated by his peers whom the Emperor himself had let loose as if he were a corpse, and they were vultures.

With his hands folded behind his back, sporting his crisp white uniform, Straum stood before the forward viewport on Orion's bridge. The crew behind him bustled about while the Executor seemed to be fixated on his own little world. It was beautiful, the nebula that is. For a man with such a contemptuous outlook on life, he was surely captivated by something so overlooked as nature its self. His eyes darted from left to right, following stars. He would even come up with morbid little stories to describe what he had seen. The nebula was like the hub of activity, and all the outlying stars were segregated because god hates them along with everybody else.

"Sir.." was a quiet voice from behind him. "High Admiral Haran is en route, he'll be here momentarily."

Straum said nothing in reply. Haran was a man whose file the Executor had discovered as he boredly prowled the restricted Imperial databases. He was responsible for the obliteration at Kamino. He had several citations against him, namely under the field of brutality and more than once, Straum had received invoices recommending psychiatric evaluation. As a doctor, it was a waste of his time. He he had an opportunity to follow up on every request, simply because someone, somewhere was frightened by another officer's actions, he would have sooner blown his brains out. For now, he would wait. </div>

The Belator Class Star Destroyer Resolute came out of hyperspace in the vibrant Nebula. The shades of blue and violet creating a mosaic of limitless life. Haran saw it and only thought to the potential to destroy it.

"Sir the Orion is within range shall I begin a communication with the bridge?" Lt. Rose asked as he approached his Lord and Master.

"No. The Executor is awaiting me. I shall not make him wait any longer." Haran replied as he turned to exit the bridge. He did not bother asking Rose if his shuttle had been prepared. If it hadn't been Rose would be finely ground space dust.

The flight was short and silent. There was an eerie warmth in this part of space. A feeling unfamiliar to the High Admiral. Space was cold, dark and unforgiving. This feeling was of comfort and empathy. He hated it with all his being. He held his arms tightly at his side waiting to step out onto the cold steel floor of the Orion. Just as he predicted the cold returned to him aboard the Imperial vessel.

There were no pleasantries for the High Admiral. There were two ISB Officers dressed in black waiting for the Chiss. No glory, no praise. "Come with us." One said coldly. Haran liked where this was going. He imagined him holding one down with both his hands around their throat. Squeezing tightly as he felt the last of their soul leave their body before it went limp with no emotion. A more direct and brutish approach, but Haran had become less subtle over the years of madness.

The walk through the Orion felt eerily similar to the Resolute. Not a thing or person was out of place. There was no sign of individualism, but pride under one banner and one thought. To the outside mind it would appear dull and lifeless, but to a genius it was a working engine of perfection.

The bridge of the Orion was no different. Every cog of reality was in perfect motion as if singularly controlled by a master hand. Haran approached the Executor as the two Officers remained behind, needlessly.

Straum. Haran said deeply. His crimson eyes peered into the Executor. However, they would find no fear to feast on from this man. </div>

Straum cocked an eyebrow, he would skip the pleasantries, they made him sick to begin with. To have to force a smile in front of his peers to instill some sense of security or warmth was pointless when he could just scowl and make them fear him.

"Yes, well" He paused and looked to his left. "Clear the bridge."

The officer who he relayed the order to stammered for a moment. "Sir you want me to clear the bridge? The men are working, they can't just activate automatic controls by the flip of a switch, you really need to--" BAM! The officer who was too caught up in his own monologue failed to notice Straum raise his blaster to his forehead. The officer slumped to the floor, which the Executor casually nudged into the adjacent control pit.

"I said clear the bridge," Straum said, in the same frighteningly calm tone of voice. Within seconds, the crew cleared out without another word. The Executor then turned to face Haran, it was only polite, he mused.

"Your reputation precedes you, Admiral, however when I look at reputations, do you know what I see?" He began his soliloquy with a sly inflection.

"I see thousands of pathetic little creatures, humans, aliens, what have you, all begging me not to step on them with the heel of my boot, and sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, not because I intend to grant them mercy, but to always keep their sniveling little minds on edge. If I were to step on them every time, I would become predictable," he snapped his tongue "and I certainly wouldn't want that. So when their little faces light up, thinking they've caught me in a good mood, I instead turn around and ash my cigarette on their faces, or perhaps order someone else to step on them." At this point, Straum began to pace back and forth.

"My point, Admiral, is that predictable routines bore me, and for the last year or so, the Emperor himself has bored me with demeaning behavior, or surprise inspections of my records which I see coming from miles away. Did you know that he's ordered COMPNOR to inspect my office on the 5th of the month for the past seven months? When I think about it, the entire Empire and the way it's been run has been boring me to death. If you've ever heard of me, which I know you have, you're thinking to yourself right now: 'Straum, I thought you were a man of order and discipline.' I answer you with this: order is in the eyes of the beholder, and the Emperor's idea of order far contradicts mine." His pacing quickened.

"My idea of order, per say, is the primal fear and immediate snap to attention the sniveling creatures feel whenever we reach that point where I decide whether to step on them or not. Humor me if you will, replace me with the Emperor in that same scenario, and the little cretins simply yield and tense up, knowing that they're about to be stepped on by Alaric Kicka. He's predictable you see, and I would love nothing more than to watch the swine rise against him, knowing that they have nothing to lose. This will happen eventually, mind you, and when all's said and done, the time and effort the Emperor has invested in fear tactics and committees and amusing little sub branches to COMPNOR have been in vain. To truly understand what it means to be a leader, he needs to watch his empire burn, and everything he once took comfort in turn against him."

Straum finally stopped pausing, and looked the Chiss admiral square in the eye. "Queue, you and I." </div>

Haran raised an eyebrow in intrigue. He listened intently at the Executor. A random feat that not many could do. Occupy the High Admiral with such interest. It had happened before on rare occasions with rare and interesting species that Haran had come across. Right before he removed them from existence. Their history and memory faded with his increasingly mad mind.

"If there was one problem in this galaxy it would be predictability. Haran responded. "Unpredictability would be my best asset"

Straum's expression curled into a smirk. To his dismay, Haran gave off no immediate reaction, other than the captivation which Straum could see in his eyes. The Executor turned to face the viewport, he pulled a small box from his tunic pocket, a brass cigarette case. He brought one of the tubes of tobacco to his mouth and lit the end, puffing a cloud of smoke from the part of his lip.

"And, as predictable as ever, the Grand Commissioner of COMPNOR himself has been gracing my personal space with investigation."

He took another drag from his cigarette and blew smoke away.

"However what he doesn't realize is that the foot soldiers of the IMCDR are far more loyal to me than any organization, not to mention my own contact in the ISB may be of some use. Tell me though, because like any high ranking Imperial, you've thought about this very topic as many times as I have, how does one go about sending a message to the most powerful man in the Galaxy?" </div>

Haran didn't have to think long. It's not like the Emperor checked his mail daily. "You show up at his doorstep." Haran said with a smile, "With a fleet of his own men who are ready to drag him out into the streets."

The blood lust in Haran's eyes fired. He noticed he had begun to salivate beyond normal scopes. He swallowed deeply and brought himself back to being grounded. Even he, himself, was beginning to lose control over the madness. Even with regained composure he heard the screams and cries of those that would fall to his hand. He could see the glory of the 5th fleet as they stormed Bastion and the rest of the galaxy. Rebels, aliens, Chiss they had all fallen to Haran's hand, but never before had he openly assaulted the Empire. This would be the beginning of his trust test. </div>

Straum took a deep draw from his cigarette and swallowed hard. He could provide several units from the IMCDR Defence Force, however he doubted that his Stormtrooper Division would follow in stride, they were indoctrinated from the beginning to follow the Emperor's will.

"What units can you provide to this little... collective think tank?" </div>

The grin on Haran's face grew tenfold. This had been an event he had planned for since his first day in the Imperial fleet. He had planted seeds of doubt in all his men about the Emperor. He had made then submit to his own will above all else, even the Emperor.

The indoctrination of his men was a minimal effort in his grand scheme, but over the years his men had been overtaken by the roots of his madness. "My entire fleet is at my disposal. The Emperor's grasp on my men has long since diluted and been washed away." </div>
